The popularity of plastic surgery continues to grow as men and women alike undergo cosmetic and reconstructive changes every year. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), 14.2 million female and 1.3 million male cosmetic procedures were conducted in 2016. With this data, consistent trends can be identified as to which age groups request which plastic surgery treatments the most.
Although body consciousness drives many teenagers to desire and seek out plastic surgery, it is far more recommended and beneficial that plastic surgery not be performed until puberty has finished and the body is fully matured into adulthood. Teenagers undergoing plastic surgery form a miniscule minority – less than one percent of all completed procedures, as many plastic surgeons prefer not to operate on young bodies that may still grow and change. Young men and women between the ages of 13-19 typically request procedures such as breast augmentation, male gynecomastia and laser hair removal.
For women between the ages of 20-29, breast augmentation is still among the most highly sought-after plastic surgery procedures. Liposuction and laser hair removal are other common procedures for both men and women in this age group. Enhancing breasts, either in size or shape, or removing stubborn unwanted fat can make a great impact on self-image and self-confidence during these years. Patients in this age range most commonly seek out procedures that will improve appearance, balance proportions and help them feel more confident in their own skin.
For women ages 30-39, much of the same procedures are performed – except at a higher numbers. As far as minimally invasive procedures, Botox injections are most commonly pursued. According to the the 2016 Cosmetic Surgery Age Distribution by the ASPS, the number of breast lifts doubled, liposuction more than doubled, and breast augmentation increased by over 25,000 procedures in this age bracket. Abdominoplasties, generally known as a “tummy tucks”, also increase in popularity for women in their 30’s. Tummy tucks make up only 10% of all procedures among 20-year-olds, yet they account for 35% of all procedures within the 30-39 age group. For many women in their thirties, plastic surgery provides an effective means for fighting the effects of aging and the lingering effects from pregnancy.
40’s And Early 50’s
Despite ages 30-39 attributing the largest overall increase in plastic surgeries, the 40-54 age range seems to have the most procedures in total. Breast implants are still popular, but not as much compared to the previous generation. The two procedures this age group calls for the most are eyelid surgery and liposuction. Medically known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery proves to be a valuable asset to both men and women wanting a more youthful appearance. Many choose to have Botox treatments as well in this age range.
55 And Older
People 55 and over tend to focus more on facial procedures and treatments. These procedures include dermabrasion, facelifts, and blepharoplasty. Removing thin layers of skin where appropriate, perking up the face, and correcting drops in the eyelids are all effective means for restoring and preserving youth and vitality.
