Tummy Tuck Procedures: Answers to Common Patient Questions
The abdomen represents a common “problem area” for men and women alike. When pregnancy or excess weight stretches out the skin and muscle tissue in the stomach, the result is often saggy, loose skin. Many people also complain abdominal fat that will not go away with dieting and exercise. Not only does this make for a less desirable appearance, it can also make exercising frustrating because no amount of exercise will bring the abdominal muscles back together or tighten loose skin.
For healthy and active Dallas residents with excess abdominal skin and fat, a tummy tuck can provide a dramatic improvement to the appearance and condition of the abdominal area.
Who is a Good Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?
The best candidate is of either gender, who stays in relatively good shape, but has loose skin and fat in the abdominal region. Additionally, women who have endured multiple pregnancies who have stretched their skin or muscle beyond its ability to return to normal make great candidates.
If you are considering losing a significant amount of weight, consider postponing the surgery as it is not a weight loss procedure.
What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure in which the surgeon tightens the muscle and removes the loose skin and fat in the abdominal area, resulting in a flatter and smoother stomach. Some patients choose to combine liposuction in the hip or flank area in conjunction with a tummy tuck. The surgery usually occurs in our outpatient surgical center, where the patient undergoes general anesthesia administered by board-certified anesthesiologists. You can expect to return home within a few hours after your surgery.
What Should I Expect after an Abdominoplasty?
After an abdominoplasty, patients can expect to experience discomfort and swelling which can be controlled with oral pain medication. You will receive very thorough instructions regarding your aftercare. Additionally, our office nurse will explain everything in detail about what to expect following your surgery and be readily available to answer your questions and address any concerns you might have. Recovery lasts between one to three weeks, depending on the individual, and you can expect some restrictions on heavy lifting and exercise for a few weeks. Your body will continue the healing process for the next several months during which the abdominal area gradually becomes flatter and firmer as the swelling subsides.
