Erbium Laser Peel

Procedure Description

The Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing is the treatment of choice for those who would like to achieve dramatic improvement in the appearance of their skin. This procedure successfully removes superficial lines to moderately deep wrinkles with less pain, fewer side-effects, and a more rapid recovery than other treatments. An erbium laser provides a milder and less invasive treatment option than a carbon dioxide (C02) laser. The C02 Laser is able to remove deeper layers of damaged skin than the erbium laser. However, an erbium laser treatment provides those whose skin damage is not as severe — or who would simply prefer a more rapid laser skin resurfacing recovery — with an excellent alternative.

How does Erbium Laser Resurfacing work?

Erbium laser skin resurfacing precisely ablates the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) to reveal the underlying skin that is smoother and younger looking. The procedure also activates collagen to promote further tightening of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to meet each patient’s specific condition to be corrected: wrinkles, scars, skin tone, texture and pigmentation conditions. An erbium laser skin resurfacing treatment is performed in the office by a fully trained professional.

When erbium laser skin resurfacing is complete, a regimen of after skin care will be explained to you and products will be provided.

Who is a candidate for Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing?

A candidate for erbium laser skin resurfacing is someone who is seeking to correct fine lines and wrinkles in the face, neck, back, chest, or hands. In general, the erbium laser resurfacing treatment is available to a wide variety of candidates. Those seeking this procedure should desire to look younger and more refreshed, yet should be realistic in their expectations. While erbium laser skin resurfacing provides incredible results, the expected outcome should be fully explained and completely understood by the patient.

Benefits of Erbium Laser Treatment

Erbium laser skin resurfacing has been found safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the effective treatment of fine lines and moderate wrinkles. Those patients who have already undergone laser skin resurfacing to enhance their look and improve their self-confidence now find themselves with greatly improved, smoother, and younger-looking skin. Erbium laser skin resurfacing has also been shown to stimulate the production of collagen, which further smooths and tightens the skin.

Is Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing safe?

Even as erbium laser skin resurfacing provides a highly effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles with a shorter recovery period and fewer side effects, those receiving treatment should still expect their skin to appear pink or red after the procedure. Some swelling may occur.

How is Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing different from Microdermabrasion?

Erbium Laser Resurfacing can accomplish in one treatment what Microdermabrasion can accomplish in three. A typical microdermabrasion treatment only removes the outer layers of the skin. Patients may become frustrated or dissatisfied when they hit a plateau or when it is necessary to undergo several Microdermabrasion treatments due to the severity of their skin conditions. Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing is a minimal to full epidermal peel (15-50 microns). Because this procedure ablates deeper into the epidermis, it is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and deep laser resurfacing peels.

How often does Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing need to be done?

We will help you determine how many laser peels you will need depending on the condition of your skin. One procedure could be sufficient for 6-12 months, but additional procedures may be performed as required. We may advise a series of Superficial Laser Peels to achieve optimal results.

What results can the patient expect from Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing?

You can expect healthier, smoother, clearer more vibrant skin. You will notice a significant and immediate change in skin texture and tightness when compared to microdermabrasion alone.

Is there any anesthesia used?

Generally, no, however, anesthesia will be determined, if needed, for your specific Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing.

Do I have to wear any type of dressing or bandage after the procedure?

No. We will provide you with the proper recovery products and instructions needed during the duration of your healing time. The recovery products will include a special cleanser, oxygenated recovery spray, recovery balm and a special post laser SPF 30. We may also recommend a physician grade mineral make-up which can be used during the recovery process. You may also use this make-up as part of your future daily regiment.

How long is the healing process?

The healing process varies from patient to patient depending on the depth of your specific peel, but will generally take three to five days. The procedure can be done on a Thursday or Friday and you can return to work the following Monday. Immediately following the procedure you will feel as if you have a bad sunburn. You will have minor sloughing and itchiness the first one to three days. By day two through four, redness will begin to fade and by day three-five any residual redness can be easily covered by make-up.
