Pregnancy is a time of huge change in the body. Following months of carrying and mothering a baby, it is somewhat unsurprising that some of those changes can alter your physical appearance permanently.
The breasts are one area in which you may see significant differences immediately following your pregnancy or breast feeding. Hormonal changes in the breasts specifically, can cause tissue deflation and a loss of volume. The only way to restore this volume and make your breasts appear more flattering in shape is through breast augmentation and/or breast lift surgery.
Post Pregnancy Breast Augmentation
As one of the main procedures in a Mommy Makeover, breast augmentation is the process of using saline or silicone implants under the breast to bring back the fullness lost. The implants allow for the volume of the breasts to be evenly distributed throughout, and provide for a more youthful and rounder appearance. Silicone implants in particular are a popular choice due to the way in which they mimic the breast’s natural look and feel.
There are varying options to choose from—regarding implant type, placement, and incision—and it is therefore advised you have a chat with a Dr. Michael R. Whetstone to choose the best one for your body.
During the Surgery
An incision is either made in the armpit under the fold of the breast or around the nipple, and the implant of your choice is then inserted. Immediately after the surgery you will see the improvements—but don’t be shocked by having a bigger bust than you had planned, there will be swelling in the area that will settle after a few weeks.
You can expect to experience some pain for the first week, however this is manageable with oral medication.
The Post Pregnancy Breast Lift
Any mother knows that flatter and lower breasts are an unavoidable part of mothering. And this is largely due to how your breasts grow during pregnancy to make room for expanding milk ducts, later shrinking and causing them to loose their volume and fullness.
With seemingly no way of turning back the clock, a post pregnancy breast lift can provide a welcome option for many moms.
During the Surgery
As the breast lift requires incisions to remove excess skin and remodel the breasts to a higher position, there is generally more scarring than with augmentation surgery. However, there are newer breast lift techniques becoming available which do allow for smaller incisions to be made and thus less scarring.
Post surgery, you may be sore for the first few days after, and swollen for around two weeks.
