According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast implant surgery has increased by 37% since 2000. Breast augmentation helps women dissatisfied with size and appearance of their breasts. Breast implants are available in two basic types: saline (sterile salt water) or silicone gel.
Silicone and saline implants are similar in functionality but differ in characteristic properties.
Silicone implants are the pioneers of breast reconstruction instruments. They are silicon shells prefilled with silicone gel that closely mimics human fat cells. The majority of women say that silicone implants create a more natural breast feel and look, which is often preferred. In 2016, 84% of all breast implant surgeries used silicone implants instead of saline.
Saline implants also have a silicon shell, but are filled with sterile salt water. The surgical procedure is different for the saline implants. During surgery, the shell is inserted empty and once it is in place, the saline solution is pumped in it. Unlike its silicone counterpart, the matter inside the saline implant will remain liquid throughout its life and will feel less natural.
Silicone implants feel smooth, firm and more natural. The physical properties of the gel give them an advantage over the saline implants. Over the years, scientists have been able to develop silicone gels that are more cohesive than the previous ones. The sticky gel gives surgeons the ability to achieve the desired shape and look by monitoring the roundness and projection of the implant.
Saline implants are very different from their silicone counterparts. Since the solution is runny, the implants are extremely soft and squishy.
Constant monitoring by the FDA throughout the years have resulted in safe and healthy surgical implants. Whether to use silicone or saline implants is now a matter of preference. Great advancements have been made to both types of implants and their respective procedures, however breast augmentation should only be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with the necessary experience to ensure a safe and successful outcome.
