Top Trends in Plastic Surgery in 2017

September 1, 2017  |   Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery becomes more accepted and sought after with each passing year. In 2016, approximately 17.1 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed, thanks in part to the technological advances and the increasing number of options available. In 2015, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found that Americans spent over $13 billion to improve and enhance their aesthetic appearances. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular plastic surgery trends in society.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, which involves increasing the volume and size of breast, remains one of the most sought after procedures. Over 290,000 breast augmentations were reported in 2016, making it the most popular plastic surgery procedure for the second year in a row.

Breast augmentations are most commonly performed using saline or silicone gel implants.

Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures

2016 also saw a surge in plastic surgery on the face along with approximately 15 million noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures. Facelifts were up 4 percent and eyelid surgeries (blepharoplasty) were up 2 percent, showing a greater desire to enhance and rejuvenate facial features

Eyelid surgery involves removing unwanted skin & fat from the region above and below the eyes to improve the appearance of drooping or puffy eyes. Facelifts reduce the visible signs of aging by removing excess skin and tightening loose wrinkled skin.

Fat Reduction

Removing fat has consistently been among the top plastic surgery procedures throughout the years and 2016 is no exception. According to the ASPS, liposuction was the second most popular plastic surgery experiencing a 6% increase with a little over 235,000 procedures.

Liposuction is used to remove excess stubborn fat in targeted parts of the body such as thighs, hips, abdomen, and buttocks in order to reshape and better contour the body.

Plastic Surgery For Men

Every year, more and more men are investing in plastic surgery to improve their own appearances. The ASPAS estimates that plastic surgery for men has increased more than 325 percent over the past 20 years. Popular procedures among women such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, and liposuction are just as sought after among men. Gynecomastia, male breast reduction surgery, completes the list of top surgical procedures for men.
