What Is An Upper Blepharoplasty?

October 25, 2016  |   Blepharoplasty, Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a procedure performed to remove excess skin or fat from the eyelids in order to improve appearance and reduce signs of aging. Upper Blepharoplasty refers specifically to when the procedure is implemented on the upper eyelid alone. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Michael Whetstone of Las Colinas Centre for Plastic Surgery is skilled in performing upper blepharoplasties that achieve natural, rejuvenated results for men and women alike.

Reasons for Upper Blepharoplasty

With aging, upper eyelid skin will loosen as the muscles surrounding the eye weaken. As a result of this diminished elasticity, excess skin and fat collect on both the upper and lower eyelids. This causes wrinkles, bulges, and droopy or sagging eyelids that affect appearance, self-image, and even vision.

An upper blepharoplasty procedure removes the excess tissue and fat resulting in smoother, firmer eyelid skin helping patients achieve a more youthful appearance. Upper eyelid surgery is recommended for patients with:

  1. Excess upper eyelid skin or sagging eyelids
  2. Vision impairment due to drooping eyelids
  3. Puffiness of upper eyelids
  4. Sagging or drooped eyebrows
  5. Forehead discomfort from continual strain of lifting sagging skin from eyelids
  6. Tired and aged looking eyes

Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure

Safe and successful upper blepharoplasty must be performed by an extensively trained and qualified plastic surgeon. The procedure typically takes between one to three hours depending on the extent of what is needed or desired.

Incisions are made following the natural contours of the eye in the creases of the upper eyelid, at times extending into the laugh lines at the outer corner of the eye. These carefully placed incisions allow for any resulting scarring to be hidden. The surgeon then trims away excess skin and fat, repositions muscles if needed, then lifts and reattaches remaining skin to give a more youthful look.

Following the procedure, patients can expect some redness and irritation at the incision sites. Swelling, bruising, and discoloration around the eyes are possible with severity differing from person to person. These should all fade within a week or two. During the recovery process, patients can expect limitations on reading or watching television, wearing contact lenses, instructions to maintain the head elevated, and avoiding strenuous activities. Eyes can feel gummy, dry, and itchy; excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and temporary changes in vision are also possible but should diminish with each passing day.
